The state of the union is...

The state of the union was orange, green, red, yellow and brown. Fall colors were on display in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota, as we drove 2800 miles. We may have also seen colors from a commuter train through the Garden State, from where I wrote a question on a postcard.

A full moon, clouds and an occasional planet also displayed themselves. Even in a crowded Times Square, it was obvious that only we were paying attention. Therefore, the colors in the sky were just for us.

We saw the lights of office buildings display "Go Sox". The Art Institute of Chicago offered up heads on platters in addition to the Van Goghs, Monets and the Serat. Marshall Crenshaw sang "Alone in A Room".

When we arrived back in Minnesota, and when the mail arrived, the answer to the question from my postcard was "yes."

The time was only for us.
