Another Mock Draft that gets the lowest of ratings
The site allows three free mock drafts per week. Here's what happened today:
Final Roster
Pos Name Team Pick
C Victor Martinez CLE R8 P5
C Matt Wieters BAL R9 P6
1B Miguel Cabrera DET R1 P6... was sure he played more than 17 games at 3B last year. NOPE.
CI Lance Berkman HOU R2 P5... was sure he still qualified for the OF. NOPE. A mistake.
2B Brandon Phillips CIN R3 P6... third round is a bargain
MI Kelly Johnson ATL R22 P5
SS Jason Bartlett TB R23 P6... Kept waiting for a bargain, then punted to the last pick
3B Chipper Jones ATL R5 P6... if he plays, he's great
OF Carlos Quentin CHW R4 P5... a bargain
OF Jay Bruce CIN R11 P6... a bargain, though 11th round I would have drafted Figgins (no bench was allowed, Berkman does not qualify for OF)
OF Nelson Cruz TEX R15 P6
OF Willy Taveras CIN R16 P5... thought this team needed someone who can steal a base
OF Justin Upton ARI R19 P6... potential top 20 OF
DH David Ortiz BOS R6 P5... no one wanted a pure utility player/ rich man's Travis Hafner
SP Josh Beckett BOS R7 P6... first SP; it's unlike me to draft wins
SP Matt Cain SF R12 P5
SP Ben Sheets MIL R13 P6
SP Randy Johnson SF R14 P5... no one wants the old man
SP Erik Bedard SEA R17 P6... R3 last year
SP John Smoltz BOS R18 P5... R7 last year
RP Joba Chamberlain NYY R10 P5... hopefully he is a starter
RP Manny Corpas COL R20 P5... cheap closer
RP George Sherrill BAL R21 P6.... cheap closer
Again, the projection system hates this team. Ranks it 9/10. The power numbers, ERA, WHIP and W look fine to me, but not to the Mock Draft Central projection board. The way these drafts are going, it looks like Matt Cain, Randy Johnson, Erik Bedard and John Smoltz land on my actual team, as do Jay Bruce, Justin Upton and the cheapest of the actual closers.
Picking 6th was nice. Lots of time to think about the next pick. I thought one of the consensus top 5 would fall through, but nope. Picking first was very nice, allowing plenty of time to plan and strategize the next two picks. Picking 10th was hardest.
