Asakusabashi Baseball Year 2

As a rookie last year, I ended up tying for fifth, and just barely in the money. I felt confident that with the seven keepers I had "protected" that I could greatly improve my team this year. The draft was competitive and much different than last year. I am not sure whether my team is improved or not.

My keepers are Jason Heyward, OF ($1), Pablo Sandoval, 3B/1B ($10), Eric Young, Jr. 2B/OF($1), Tommy Hanson, SP ($13), Madison Bumgarner, SP ($1), Billy Wagner, RP ($14) and Neftali Feliz, RP ($6). The $1 prospects range the gamut. Heyward looks like the next Pujols and will start for Atlanta. Bumgarner was given every shot at the rotation but has not looked good. Eric Young, Jr. looks good, but the Rockies sent him down anyway. Certainly, having these keepers ($46 for 7 players) benefits the team, even if two of the seven start the season as dead weight.

A common strategy in drafting a team is "stars and scrubs." Last year, I drafted Albert Pujols ($42) and Miguel Cabrera ($33) at first base and Johan Santana ($35) at pitcher. Those stars carried my team for quite a while.

I would have done the same this year, but others were following my playbook. Albert Pujols was protected for $47. Hanley Ramirez went for $49. Miguel Cabrera went for $40. Mark Teixeira went for $39. Ryan Braun and Tim Lincecum went for $40. The teams who spent on these top players may do well and I would have drafted them myself at the right price.

In an auction, you can always get the player you want if you have the money. I selected David Wright ($35), Jose Reyes ($31) and Matt Wieters ($19).

One also has to take what comes to you. Felix Hernandex, SP ($31), Ichiro, OF ($21), Nick Markakis, OF ($23), Curtis Granderson, OF ($20) and Erick Aybar, SS ($8) were players I did not necessarily target, but liked the price. Last year, it seems like everyone was stacking their outfield except for me, and it seemed like I spent the whole year trying to improve my outfield. This year it did not seem like outfield was a priority for anyone in the league. As the prices were much cheaper, I took advantage.

Prior to the draft, I targeted Jay Bruce, OF ($16) or Carlos Quentin or Carlos Gonzalez for outfield power. With speedsters in the middle infield, I felt I still needed the power. Drafting Bruce left $10 for seven players and was not a good strategic move as Todd Snider for $1 would have also served this role. Drafting Rick Porcello, SP ($4) left $6 for six players. I squeezed myself out of $2 closers and will struggle with saves. Top dollar went for every save last year, so I did not budget for saves.

My dollar picks were Todd Helton, 1B, John Buck, C, Brian Bruney, RP, Mike Adams, RP, Clay Buchholz, SP and James Loney, 1B.

We pick reserves in a snake draft. I chose Todd Snider, OF, Nick Johnson, 1B, Placido Polanco, 2B, Brad Penny, SP, Lastings Milledge, OF and Justin Duchscherer, SP.

I try to use most of the $260 of draft money for top players and this team has its share of top players. So, I have to be satisfied with the way this draft turned out, even if I can point to a team or two I like better.
