Week 8 Review

Yakking Muggers are still in second place, though not really. Hitting is not there yet. Pitching is there, but artificially inflated due to innings pitched. On the bright side, the first place team points, partly from very good hitting, are even more inflated by innings pitched. There were some negative hitting days last week. Losing Granderson (again) and the demotion of Arcia hurts the outfield. Hanley should return this week, and more than make up for the outfield issues. Jemile Weeks (AAA) and Billy Hamilton (AAA) may be available for the next Hanley injury.

The Popular Crime standings are bunched, with Adho Muhka in second place. Homeruns and stolen bases are a deficiency. Giancarlo Stanton and Mark Teixeira return from injury and Billy Hamilton may get promoted soon, addressing those areas.

Asahi again saw great pitching (2.59 ERA, 0.96 WHIP), though with only one 2- start pitcher, wins and saves were scarce. It was a good week for homeruns even though Jay Bruce and Brett Gardner led the team with two each. I added Vinnie Pestano, the perennial Cleveland set-up man immediately as Chris Perez injured himself. I recognized that his velocity was down after his own injury, but for him not to take over seems unfair. The prognostications all said “grab Joe Smith now” so he is added, as well. (Late update, just before lineups set: Vinnie gets first shot.) Joel Peralta, on the bench, seems ready to take over for Fernando Rodney (ERA>6), so while saves have been an issue for the last month, Betancourt + League + Peralta + Cleveland would make a full complement of closers. Rosenthal is hard to bench based on his strikeouts, so Peralta and Joe Smith sit. Four two start pitchers go, and not all of the matchups are good, so this week could be a rollercoaster.
