Bill Smith, revisited

I like Bill Smith, I wrote after the Young/Garza swap.

After the Johan Santana deal, I am not so sure. Even if one or more of the Mets acquired play for the Twins this year, it is unlikely that they will be even average players. If any pitcher is worth $25 million per year, it is Santana. I would have rather seen the Twins sign him for 5 years/$125 million and then deal him mid-season if it becomes obvious the Twins cannot contend. Wouldn't they get more for Santana at a point in the season where the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox (and others!) see clearly that he could put them in the World Series? The Pohlads probably see it differently as it is their money. I am not Bill Smith and I do not know.

Here is a back-up plan to put the Twins in contention now that Miguel Cabrera is a Detroit Tiger. Sign Barry Bonds for $5 million, plus another $5 million in incentives if he can repeat his 2007 performance. Get $3 million of this sum from letting Craig Monroe walk.

The homerun king will draw fans. The prognosticators indicate Bonds' OPS (onbase + slugging) will be near the top of the league, He would certainly help a team win games, and as an AL player, Bonds would be a designated hitter, a position where the Twins have been terrible lately. Why not, Bill Smith?
