BashiBashiBashi Transaction Log
It seems like a month happened this week (4/27-5/1) after I felt the team was rounding into shape the previous week.
4/18 Rich Hill (waivers): I still have not played him, but I like the K/IP and the WHIP projections. Also, the Cubs seem like they might get him some wins. I am feeling good on this waiver pick, though I notice he has a tough upcoming schedule. Whom could possibly improve BashiBashiBashi more?
drop Corey Patterson
4/23 Johnny Damon (FA), drop Juan Pierre. I need steals, but Pierre is not playing much.
John Lackey and Robinson Cano are dropped. They are picked up by teams with higher waiver priority on 4/28.
4/27 Carl Crawford (trade) for Justin Upton and Matt Capps. This makes Damon expendable and leaves me with five relief pitchers, my normal quiver.
4/27 Carlos Quentin (FA) fills out the roster. I plan to drop him for waiver picks, but then he hits two homeruns in three days and leads the AL in OPS. At the Twins/White Sox game, I learn that an injury crippled him last year and that his performance for the Sox has Wally Pipped Jerry Owens. I know Quentin was highly sought a couple of years back. At age 25, he may be for real. Now, I am playing him instead of Swisher. Quentin’s season is now ranked 14 by Yahoo.
Johnny Cueto is dropped. I plan to pick him up on waivers, but then he bombs, so I figure I can get him as a FA. Ryan Zimmerman, age 23, and Max Scherzer, age 23, are also waiver candidates. I would take Zimmerman over Reynolds, even though Reynolds’ season to date is ranked 13 by Yahoo and Bill JAmes has Reynolds at an 900+ OPS. Max Scherzer is touted as a closer candidate, and I have an RP slot available when I drop injured Jonathon Broxton. (Update: Scherzer will start May 5, and his strong debut makes it likely a high waiver pick will get him.)
4/29 John Smoltz goes to the DL to join Rich Harden. I only have three active starters-- Bedard, Hernandez and Hill-- and I am 50 IP behind pace. Though I can stream pitchers to catch up on IP, it feels like time to get more pitching. Update: Smoltz plans to return as a closer, not as a starter. So, starting pitching is even more of a need, and I have my five RPs again.
4/30 Jered Weaver (FA) 1.23 WHIP-projected, 1.38 WHIP- 2008. He seems like a strong pitcher except for the 1.39 WHIP in 2007. The schedule, however, seems relatively favorable.
drop Jonathon Broxton (injured).
5/1 Johnny Cueto (FA)
drop Johnny Damon
Per Aaron Gleeman, Rotoworld
5/1 Jeff Kent (FA) to fill in for B.J. Upton, who seems to have injured himself. Kent will play at Colorado, and is batting clean up, so he should be productive.
drop Billy Butler
Bashibashibasi fell from the top 1000 to number 4753 overall in Yahoo, but still leads the league for now. I am liking the lineup more as the season progresses.

5/1 Johnny Cueto (FA)
drop Johnny Damon
Per Aaron Gleeman, Rotoworld
A 22-year-old rookie going through some growing pains once the league gets familiar with him is certainly nothing new and Cueto has pitched better than his now-ugly ERA indicates, posting a 33-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.09 WHIP over 35 innings. Be patient and, if you can, buy low
