Fantasy Baseball-- Final Days
Monday, Monday, Monday
Four of us saw the Twins lose to the Kansas City speed prospects. The Tampa Bay Rays tied Boston in the Wildcard standings. Meanwhile, Asakusabashi was fighting it out for second place.
Wins are a competitive category. Jamie Garcia (9.000, 5K, 1.2500) started and pitched only four innings of the Cardinals loss. Josh Beckett (9.000, 5K, 1.8333) of the competition pitched six innings and also did not win. Asakusabashi still leads the third place competitor 87 wins (9 points) to 86 wins (8 points).
Saves is another competitive category. Kyle Farnsworth came in with two outs in the ninth to spell James Shields and get a save. Francisco Cordero also got a save. Asakusabashi had finally passed the third place competitor in saves. Montreal's Hanrahan and League got saves though, so that change swung back. Finally, Neftali Feliz saved an important game vs. the Angels making it a 120 save (10.5 points) to 120 save (10.5 points) tie. Can the team with 122 saves (12 points) be caught? Asakusabashi has a chance to advance here, especially if Chris Perez and Jason Motte can join Farnsworth, Cordero and Feliz in the save mix.
Tonight, Javier Vazquez pitches in Asakusabashi's final start. More categories are in play than just wins. ERA is very tight, and two points can be lost with a 0.008 swing. (Hopefully, Jesus Guzman and San Diego can do something at home against Ryan Dempster. Also to be rooted against in terms of opposing runs: Bedard/Harrison/Oswalt) It might take a Javier no-hitter but two points can be made up in WHIP with a 0.0070 advance. (Here, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly are the pitchers to root against.) It looks like Asakusabashi will lose a point in Ks unless Matt Garza and David Price don't get K's. So, there is no security in the current standings.
Batting average could affect the outcome. Asakusabashi has 10 points by 0.003, while the third place team has 8 points by less than 0.0001. Either team can lose a point here. The third place team is also in ties for R and HR and is apt to gain or lose 1/2 points. If Matt Scherzer were to actually pitch, strikeouts from him could also mean one point less for the the key competitor, but why would he pitch now?
Daily Standings:
Asakusabashi +1.5 92.5
Competitor +0.5 91.5
The takeaway. This is very close.
