Asakusabashi Darfish

All teams are drafted. How will they do? Here is the link to an article which provides a spreadsheet that calculates projections for your team.

The Darfish draft gave me an odd team. I thought I was drafting for power, but ended up with a pitching heavy team with quite a bit of speed. I bid on players like Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols, but since I did not reach, I did not get them. The best hitters are those protected from last year's team-- Matt Kemp, Giancarlo Stanton, Brett Lawrie and Dee Gordon. Kevin Youkilis ($17), whom I seem to draft for every team, and Dan Uggla ($20) were the top hitter draftees. As Jason Heyward went for $17, Kendrys Morales for $14, Freddie Freeman for $12 and Brandon Belt for $9, the 1B/utilities types ended up as Ike Davis ($13) and Adam Lind ($6). The outfield completed with Mitch Moreland ($1), Jose Tabata ($1) and Emilio Bonifacio ($11) also does not inspire the way Justin Upton, $39, might. The last infielder was Jose Altuve ($10), who would not have gone for $10 except that he was my final player and $10 is what I had. I picked up John Mayberry, 1B/OF, in the ultra round.

I almost forgot. I drafted catchers, too. Devin Mesoraco ($2) and Ryan Doumit ($4). Unlike last year, I actually even bid on Brian McCann, $19, Matt Wieters, $22 and Joe Mauer, $22. But, as with the rest of the draft, I did not not reach, so I get what I pay for.

I tried to spend $85 on starting pitchers to go with Matt Moore. Just as it was hard to draft top hitters, it was hard to draft top pitchers. Halladay, Lee, Lincecum, King Felix and CC went for $31 and more. So, the top pitcher draftee is Cole Hamels ($28). Hamels, Daniel Hudson ($17), Yu Darvish ($20), Tommy Hanson ($13) and Scott Baker ($1) add to $79. Erik Bedard, Jhoulys Chacin, Jair Jurrjens, and Jeff Samardzija were chosen in the ultra round. Relievers are Kyle Farnsworth and Jason Motte, who were protected, plus fill-in closers, Sean Marshall ($7) and Brad Lidge (ultra). Matt Moore, Yu Darvish, Jhoulys Chacin are all fourth starters who do not pitch this week. The opening week starters are therefore Dan Hudson, Tommy Hanson, Erik Bedard, Jair Jurrjens and Jeff Samardzija, which looks like a last place opening rotation. On the plus side, week 3 (counting the series in Japan) is packed with two start pitchers and the team may be favored for the coveted first waiver wire pick up of the year.

Jamie Garcia, $9; Brandon Phillips, $25; Jose Reyes, $33, Jason Heyward, $17; Brandon Morrow, $9; and Hiroki Kuroda, $3 still feel like they are on my team. This was an unusual draft in that no one from last year's team returned, aside from protections.

Enough introduction. What does that projection tool say about the team?

It does not like the hitting, projecting 76 runs, 19 homeruns, 71 rbi, 14 SB and .266 average. For a contending team, the software targets 79 runs, 20 homeruns, 75 rbi, 14 SB and a .271 average. It is not clear that the software likes the pitching either, projecting 3.42 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 9W, 7 SV and 130 K per player versus targets of 3.56, 1.23, 10, 14, and 141. The software does not bother to project Erik Bedard or Jeff Samardzija and does not know about the injuries to Ryan Madson and Drew Storen which impact Sean Marshall and Brad Lidge.

For comparison sake, my Yahoo friends team, Svanasana, gets the following projections. 85 runs, 20HR, 81 RBI, 16 SB, .283 AVG, 3.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 7W, 11 SV, 116 K. My winner's league team, the Moore Ons, gets: 78 R, 22 HR, 83RBI, 9SB, .286, 3.34, 1.17, 9, 9, 123.

What do I conclude from all of this? Mostly, I conclude that it is too early to conclude. Last year, for example, the projection was also for a team with a low batting average .271 (versus .274 target), and batting average turned out just fine at .274 (third place).

Moore On Adds: Roy Oswalt (need another solid starter) for Carlos Quentin (injured), Juan Pierre (more SBs needed, and he seems to be leadoff hitter for the Phillies) for Jose Tabata

Adho Muhka Svanasana Add: Brandon Belt for Michael Pineda (pre-injury)
