Fantasy Baseball-- Last Day Headlines

Week by Week Results

The baseball season ended. Kyle Farnsworth and our Tampa Bay Rays held on against the Yankees in 12 innings to advance. The Cardinals, behind Chris Carpenter's complete game shutout, also advanced. This made for a quite unlikely end to the regular season. But, you ask, tell me about your fantasy teams?

Ballywood had a huge closing day, advancing in ERA points where no chance was foreseen. Chris Carpenter (W, 9ip, 0r, 3br, 11K) and Stephen Strasburg (W, 6ip, 0r, 3br, 10K) led the low ERA day. The final totals are first place, 99 points. Second place has 89 points.

The primary obsession is the CBS league. The stakes are 25% for second place, 20% for third place, 10% for forth place. Neftali Feliz picked up a key save and two strikeouts, worth 1.5 points. Second place at 94.5 points was achieved with a 2.5 point margin. As I am checking the IPod during Monica's murder shows, here is the drama in the quest for second place.

  • No save opp for Cordero in a Reds loss. Four closers remain.
  • Reyes 1-1 on way to batting title, so my team has a batting champion, FWIW.
  • An article claims Farnsworth is not a keeper? What will Monica think?
  • Strasburg 10 Ks, 3 br, 6 ip. Happy to see him leave as 10 more Ks give Montreal another point. Can the Marlins take away his win? 2-1 in 7th with 2 on 2 out, but the inning ends. Strasburg gets the win for Montreal. The Asakusabashi lead in W is one. Storen pitches the ninth and gets the save for Anchorage, which now leads Asakusabashi by one save and Montreal by two saves. Anchorage has no more closers. Asakusabashi needs at least two saves for 12 points. At least one save is critical.
  • K lead now three. Need David Price to not have many Ks, but assume this point is lost.
  • Lead over Montreal is just one and perhaps not for long. Hope to get points back with Farnsworth, Motte, Perez, and Feliz.
  • David Price strikes out three before he exits, so the K point is still in play. Rays behind 7-0. Looks like no Farnsworth.
  • Hope for saves from Feliz, Perez, Motte
  • Mavericks lost a BA point, at least for now
  • Dempster doing well. Losing WHIP point. Up 91.5 to 91 over third place.
  • Tight races: 1182 Ks to 1182 Ks. Up 3 SB.
  • Dee Gordon gets a SB.
  • Walden relieves. His strikeouts can cost. Walden: 0 K, 2 r. Texas leads 3-1.
  • Feliz strikes out M. Izturis for 1183 K and a lead
  • Feliz: 2Ks and S #123. The save is worth at least a first place tie (11.5 points), pending Montreal closers.
  • The Dempster outing (5.2 ip, 9 er, 12 br) is worth a WHIP point, pending Guerra.
  • Opposing closers to watch: League, Papelbon, Hanrahan, Peralta
  • Farnsworth strikes out three in the top of the 11th inning. A win may be worth 0.5 points, pending Gio Gonzalez of Oakland, but the game goes to 12 innings.
  • Papelbon gives up a run. A win by Papelbon may be worse than a save. Papelbon loses. League is the only opposing closer still out, so I project second place for myself, just as elections are sometimes called.
  • In progress: Oakland/Seattle and Arizona/Dodgers game, where Matt Kemp has a shot for 40/40 in the ninth inning. Kemp strikes out, rather than hitting homerun #40.
  • At 94.5 points, the lead is 2.5 points.

The 2.5 point lead holds. During period 25, the previous week and one-half, Asakusabashi has advanced 7.5 points. Six of the top 100 players, this period, hit for Asakusabashi-- Kemp, Reyes, Phillips, Fielder, Gordon, Pence. Five of the top 100 pitchers, including top ranked Javier Vazquez, pitch for Asakusabashi. The others are Feliz, Halladay, Perez and Garcia. (Kuroda and Morrow, not active, were also top 100 players. CC Sabathia, is the only starter active this period who is not ranked as having top 100 results.)
